The daughter of ex- South African Leader Jacob Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related allegations at the commencement of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being tried over statements she made on social media in the past during deadly unrest in South Africa that followed the detention of her parent.

A week of chaos in several parts of the country in July 2021, including looting and arson, left at least three hundred deceased and led to damage worth an approximate 2.8 billion dollars (2.2 billion pounds).

Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of encouraging this violence and is charged with allegations of incitement to commit terror acts and public disorder.

History of the Legal Matter

The protests were centered in the provinces of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the former president's detention for ignoring a legal directive to give evidence at an probe into accusations of graft while he was serving as president.

She has always refuted the allegations against her, with her lawyer previously calling the prosecution's evidence as weak.

She has also consistently claimed the allegations against her were an effort to settle political scores with her father after he started his own political party and competed against the African National Congress.

Backing and Case Arguments

This was supported by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and familial targeting" against the previous head of state and his kin.

A small number of backers from her party, her party, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other party leaders participated in the hearings inside.

The defense has argued that the evidence presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and does not have substantial evidence for a criminal finding.

Central Elements of the Legal Proceedings

  • Digital posts from four years ago form the core of the prosecution's case
  • Fatal demonstrations in 2021 resulted in major deaths and financial losses
  • The individual on trial faces multiple allegations of incitement to unrest
  • Legal trials are expected to carry on for multiple weeks

The court case continues as all parties present their evidence before the court in what is projected to be a highly monitored legal battle with significant political ramifications for South Africa.
