Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen people sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house close to the Verona region to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman got detained at the scene and another man who escaped after the blast was located soon after. All three have been transported to the hospital.

The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene showed the building turned into a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to remove the three family members in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.

Mediators had been sent to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member caused the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno told reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our personnel,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the incident included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The prosecutor was convinced the blast had occurred on a floor above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to local news, noting that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
