Kalimuendo Fires as Nottingham Forest Claim Sentimental Victory Over Malmö

“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” rang out through the City Ground as Forest supporters celebrated another win against Malmö. Much has transpired since Francis's winning header secured the European Cup in 1979, but the club continue to cherish those memories. Equally, significant changes have taken place in the weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with the team looking refreshed and securing a comfortable win thanks to goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their prospects of advancing in the Europa League.

Building Momentum with Third Straight Victory

For Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after ending sixth in their domestic league – represented a third consecutive win across all competitions and further built on the momentum gained from the previous week's success at Anfield. While this match was a re-run of the club's European Cup success in name, the game itself was devoid of any significant tension or jitters.

This was an event dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third competitive clash between the teams since the showpiece event 46 years ago.

The home side leaned into the heritage, paying tribute to the legends of 1979 by providing them, along with their visiting opponents, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Malmö's squad from that time were additionally in attendance. Both teams shared a dinner together prior to the match. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and their teammates were given a rousing reception when they assembled on the field a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a characteristically impressive display was shown in the home stand.

Remembering the Past

“May 30, 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” read half of a giant tifo, in capital letters. While no one needed reminding of what ensued, the remaining section was unfurled as the players came out from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. A second brilliant display depicted Clough observing proceedings beside his assistant Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.

Control from the Outset

So, the hosts had drunk in those beautiful recollections, but what about the performance on the evening? It was pretty good, too. They were in complete control from the moment the forward whistled an effort off target inside the opening moments and built a 2-0 advantage by the break. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.

It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who came to Forest aged eight, made the first dent in the visitors' defense captained by their own homegrown captain, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest defender Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a opponent and into the path of the midfielder, who finished with his right foot from the edge of the box to register his maiden strike since last March.

Second Strike Confirms Dominance

Yates was implicated in the team's second goal on the brink of half-time, too, his free header parried by the goalkeeper Melker Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to tap in the rebound from point-blank range. James McAtee, the playmaker given a rare start and only his second appearance since September, was the catalyst, chipping a perfect ball towards his teammate at the back post.

Just moments before, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was deflected wide off Malmö defender Rösler, the son of former Manchester City forward Uwe, and an unmarked Milenkovic also earlier had a strong header smartly repelled by the keeper, who returned in place of the former Villa goalie Olsen.

Malmö’s Difficulties

This was the Swedish side's first match since the domestic league concluded on 9 November, and they struggled to equal Forest’s intensity. Forest extended the lead to three when the defender applied the finishing touch after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a set-piece. Yates had a shot stopped, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic pounced on the rebound.

Forest then went for the jugular, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a right-foot shot on to the bar before Sangaré sent an ambitious effort wide from distance. It was one of those nights. Dyche, mindful of Sunday’s league game here against Brighton & Hove Albion, implemented multiple alterations from the side that stunned the Reds at their ground last weekend, when they also scored three times, though he introduced substitutes and Igor Jesus during the second half.

Hiccup-Free Evening for Forest

It proved a flawless evening for Nottingham Forest. Dyche could withdraw Murillo with the game already boxed off and later introduced 19-year-old full-back Sinclair for his senior bow. He discussed the Forest old guard providing “bits of gold” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the current crop demonstrated they are able of a few nuggets of thrills, as well.
