Arttu Välilä scored the decisive goal at 2:11 of overtime as the Finnish squad engineered a remarkable 4-3 win over the two-time defending champion American team on Friday evening in the world junior hockey last eight.

"We must give credit to the US," stated Finland's leader Aron Kiviharju. "They are a fantastic squad, loaded with exceptional players and a superbly organized team. But I mentioned we wanted that payback from the previous final, and I think we kind of earned it this evening."

In the semi-finals on Sunday, the Finns will take on the Swedish team, while Canada will play Czechia. The Swedes defeated Latvia 6-3, Team Canada produced a five-goal first period in a seven to one romp over the Slovakian team, and Czechia overcame the Swiss by a 6-2 score.

Thrilling Final Frame and Overtime

The Michigan State Spartan L. Ryker tied it for the United States with one minute and thirty-three seconds left in the third period and the University of Notre Dame goalie Nick Kempf off for an extra attacker.

Lee Tuuva and J. Saarelainen found the net in a 55-second burst in the third period to hand Finland a two to one advantage. He leveled the score at two-all with seven minutes and seventeen seconds to go, then set up his teammate's go-ahead goal with 6:22 on the clock. Saarelainen also assisted on Tuuva’s goal.

Notable Performances and Reactions

The Boston University blueliner Cole Hutson recorded a goal and a helper for the United States after taking a shot in the head versus the Swiss and sitting out the next two contests.

"I thought we executed well for a lot of the game," the defenseman commented. "But the small details that they got, many of their high-quality chances resulted from our errors."

His university colleague Cole Eiserman handed the United States a 2-1 lead on a power play with 9:45 left in the second period. He accepted a pass from his teammate and fooled the Finnish goaltender with a one-timer from the right circle.

C. Hutson scored on a fast break 35 seconds into the second period. Heikki Ruohonen equalized at 4:46 on a snap shot from the left side.

Other Quarter-Final Action

In the late game in the host city, the Canadian team overwhelmed Slovakia with the five-goal first.

Cole Reschny, Tij Iginla, Michael Misa, Sam O’Reilly and B. Martin tallied in the first period, and Porter Martone and Cole Beaudoin connected in the second. Jack Ivankovic made 21 saves.

"This demonstrates how powerful we are," Martin said. "Going up five-nothing advantage, it really kills their confidence."

In the opening playoff game, Anton Frondell netted a pair for Team Sweden against Latvia. The defenseman Leo Sahlin Wallenius had a goal and two helpers to aid the Swedish side stay undefeated in their five outings.

In Minneapolis Tomas Galvas, S. Drancak, A. Jiricek, Petr Sikora, Jiri Klima and J. Fibigr provided the goals for the Czechs.

Relegation Game Result

Germany triumphed in the relegation game, beating the Danes 8-4. M. Schams had two goals to ensure his nation retain its spot next year in the main event. Denmark was relegated to the second tier.
